Thrush

Definition: Thrush or acute pseudomembranous candidiasis is an infection characterised by white plaque like areas on the oral mucosa.

It involves the superficial layers of the epithelium. Removal of these plaques reveals underlying erythematous or erosive areas. These plaques are composed of desquamated epithetial cell, inflammatory cells, fibrin and fungal colonies.

Treatment :
Treatment involves identification and correction of the underlying factors responsible for candidiasis. Blood glucose  determination   should   be
carried out in patients presenting with oral candidiasis who are not known diabetics. Second step in the treatment is antifungal therapy.
Antifungal therapy :

The various drugs used in antifungal therapy are nystatin, amphotericin B, miconazole, clotrimazole., ketoconazole and fluconazole. Among these drugs mycostatin and amphotericin B are commonly used.
