Pregnancy : Dental consideration

The 1st trimester (1st 3 months) of pregnancy is the period during which complex process of organogenesis is taking place. At this stage the fetus is at risk of developing developmental defects or undergo abortion. Infection, drugs, stress and rediographic examination without suitable precaution can affect the development of the fetus.
In the 2nd trimester the fetus undergoes growth and maturation.  Infection  and   drugs   such  as  tetracycline
should be avoided. Dental procedures may be carried out with certain degree of safety in the 2nd trimester.
In the 3rd trimester the positioning of
the patient of the dental chair can
cause hypotension due to compression of the gravid uterus on the inferior vena cava, resulting in syncope stress can precipitate pre-term labour.
