Black Hairy Tongue :

This is the condition where there is hypertrophy of the filiform papillae of the tongue with lack of desquamation. forming a thick layer on the dorsal surface of the tongue. The colour may very from yellowish white to brown or black. This condition is more predominantly seen in smokers. The papillae often show staining from tobacco. The aetiology is unknown. However, the role of candida albicans has been suggested.
